We enjoyed a great day walking around Muscat with a couple from Toronto whom we met on the ship. No need for an expensive tour here.

I felt a huge pang of sadness as we disembarked – the last time we were in this country we were with some special friends from HK and Allan is no longer with us. He was such a wonderful man – avid fisherman, historian, Chinese medical doctor and computer science professor. My favourite memory is when he stopped the car north of Muscat and ran to the beach where fisherman were just bringing in their nets full of every kind of fish imagineable. What a sight! He bought some shrimp and squid directly from them and cooked them up at our bed and breakfast. What a wonderful day and evening that was.

This trip, with just a day in port, we simply wandered through the market area, popped into a very interesting little museum (in a series of old houses by the seafront), and climbed the hill behind the town hoping to get into an old fort. No matter how hard Tony tried to break the lock, though, we couldn’t check out the inside. We did, however, get a lovely view of the town, surrounding hills, and port area from the fort.
